What are Power of Two workshops?

Great marriages start with love. However, just as loving a sport may not be enough to master the game, loving your partner is just the beginning...

Power of Two live-online marriage workshops are highly interactive classes taught by trained marriage educators and delivered directly to your living room through your computer and phone. Our small class format allows you to get to know your teacher and other couples from around the country.

The Power of Two curriculum

The Power of Two curriculum is based on the fundamental belief that with the right skills almost every conflict in a relationship can have a win-win solution. Hard to believe? We know it's true because we live it every day. While people often say that compromise is just an inevitable part of relationships, at Power of Two we set the bar higher. We teach the skills to help you eliminate fighting from your relationship and to help you enjoy the rewards of a harmonious, fun, loving partnership.

In the workshops you will learn skills to...

  • Communicate without arguing or compromising.
  • Listen so your partner feels heard.
  • Speak so that your partner can hear.
  • Make satisfying win-win decisions together in a calm, supportive, and loving way.
  • Incubate positivity and intimacy.

Consider this -- many couples who complete our workshops actually find themselves enjoying talking through their old difficult issues. How? They have learned to transform conflict into an opportunity to express their love, intimacy and respect for each other without compromising what's important to themselves.

The live-online experience

Can you really teach relationship skills online?! In cooperation with Torque Interactive Media, www.torqueim.com, who specializes in creating highly interactive e-learning, Power of Two has developed an innovative live-online experience that far exceeds nearly everyone's expectations. In fact, after completing the workshop, many couples say they preferred the live-online format to an in-person workshop:

"We were skeptical of how the whole online thing would work... but in the end, we thought doing it from home made it a more honest experience. We were sitting on our own couch, eating pop-corn, and being coached through the various exercises. Now our couch feels like a safe place to have difficult discussions because it reminds us to use our Power of Two skills. We were really impressed..." -- Lauren & Ben, Washington DC

Live-online workshops include:

  • an upbeat live marriage educator
  • 5-15 other couples learning along with you
  • a synchronous guided computer experience
  • phone conferencing as a full group and as sub-groups

Every couple needs:

  • a speaker phone (so you and your partner can both participate)
  • a computer with an internet connection
  • couples do not need to be in the same location (The instructor can put you into a private sub-conference call for skills practice together.)

The workshop experience includes:

  • Exercises for both individuals and couples
  • Group discussion (by both phone and chat)
  • Interactive web games
  • Small group breakout skill practice sessions (The instructor can "visit" and coach each small group individually.)
  • Engaging instructor presentations of specific skill concepts

The Power of Two curriculum was written by Dr. Susan Heitler, PhD based on over 30 years of clinical private practice as a family therapist. She appears regularly in magazines like Ladies Home Journal and Men's Health. Dr. Heitler was featured on the CBS Early Show where anchor Harry Smith introduced her as "the most influential person in my life -- my therapist."

Dr. Heitler graduated from Harvard, earned a masters degree in education at Boston University and then a doctorate in psychology from New York University. She and her husband have been happily married for nearly 40 years and have enjoyed raising four children who now are beginning to have children of their own.
